A MODERN DAY PROBLEM – SYNTHETIC CHEMICALS
Since World War
II chemical use has grown by leaps and bounds. In 1945 annual production
of synthetic chemical substances was one billion pounds. In 1987 it was 287 billion pounds.
During the same period doctors began noticing the phenomenon now recognized as Multiple Chemical Sensitivity,
also known as Environmental Illness – a condition in which individuals become sensitized to
chemicals by indoor pollution and other exposures and then suffer a variety of adverse reactions
to low levels of chemicals from consumer and building products.
In
1945 the phenomenon was unheard of. In 1987 it was estimated to affect up to 15% of the population.
Is there a connection with the burgeoning use of synthetic chemicals? It’s
just common sense to think so.
AFM WAS CREATED IN RESPONSE TO THIS PROBLEM.
In the late 1970’s, AFM’s
founder Nester Noe, began to notice a connection between the chemicals used in everyday products
and the frequent sickness and disability of the workers making them. Working with a team of like-minded
chemists, he began to formulate products that would be safer for the people who made them and the
people who used them. AFM’s first creations were protective sealers, used
to stop outgassing of harmful chemicals like formaldehyde from common building products
like plywood and particle board.
SafeCoat ® SafeSeal,
for example, was born when a major hospital had to close it’s doors because it actually made allergy
patients sicker. Doctors suspected indoor air pollution from the walls, ceilings, carpet and everything
else. After coating the interior of the facility with SafeSeal,
it reopened successfully.
Working with doctors – allergists and specialists
in the rapidly growing field of environmental medicine – and their patients, Dr. Noe and his chemists created new
formulas for paints, stains, cleaners, adhesives, a carpet
care system and more. Toxic chemicals were replaced with non toxic or less toxic substitutes.
Today we offer over 30 SafeCoat ® and SafeChoice ® products all of
which have been field tested by the most demanding consumers, those with Multiple Chemical Sensitivity /
Environmental Illness.
THE AFM APPROACH
Unlike
other “environmental” products, ours really work. SafeCoat ® paint goes on like any other paint. SafeChoice ®
cleaners clean as well as any other cleaner. Only they work safely, because we
will not formulate a product unless we can significantly reduce the toxic chemical residuals from
the amounts contained in typical products. Residuals are non-essential elements (like formaldehyde)
existing in under-refined primary ingredients. They are unnecessary for
product performance and, of even more importance, they are harmful to people exposed to them.
We use only very highly refined raw materials which have either eliminated or reduced toxic residuals to de
minimis levels. The result is also a higher quality product.
And we know what not to use. We avoid aromatic hydrocarbon compounds,
the most dangerous type of VOC (volatile organic compound). Not only are aromatic
hydrocarbon harmful to the environment, because they react with chlorine in the air to create smog
and other compounds which damage the ozone layer, but they are dangerous to the individual, because they assault and
over time break down the immune system. Yet these ingredients are commonly used in typical products.
Finally we do not use chemicals which are known to cause allergic reactions. Such
reactions are a body’s way of saying it does not want to be exposed to the toxin. These include:.
- Phenols, formaldehyde and other heavy metals
- Crystaline silica (a known carcinogen)
- Chlorine, amonia, butyl ethers and other corrosive cleaning agents
- Odor (Odour) masking chemicals or fragrances
WHY BE CONCERNED?
Why be concerned with the low level exposure to the chemicals found insuch as a cleaner
– may be relatively nominal, the combined exposures of hundreds of products we keep in our homes and
use every day build up until they become overwhelming, until the air in our homes and offices becomes a virtual chemical
soup. Over time these numerous small exposures begin to have a synergistic effect, and chip away
at your immune system until it simply cannot tolerate it anymore. Hence the growth in the chemically sensitive
community and the risk to every one
